Monday Success: What’s App

Mar 17, 2014 by

The Monday Success Story this week comes from the news.  Brian Acton is an inspiration and his story is a great example of how perseverance and hard work pay off, literally.  Brian was an experienced software engineer when he tried to get a job at both Twitter and Facebook.  Two rejections led him to get a little crazy and try something innovative.  He partnered with a former Yahoo coworker, Jan Koum, in 2009 to create WhatsApp.  The cloud-based messaging app quickly became very popular with around 450 million users.

Fast forward to 2014.  Facebook, the company that had chosen not to employ Acton and his WhatsApp partner, purchases WhatsApp.  Facebook reportedly paid $19 billion to the two developers who bounced back after rejection, worked hard and dug into their inner genius to create something wonderful.

Modeling resilience for our students is something we sometimes forget to do.  Occasionally, especially when introducing technology, things don’t work out the first time, or even the second time.  However, we have to stay persistent and take chances on our own sometimes.

Don’t stop being creative and trying new things… you and your students may make $19 billion someday.
