Make 2015 A Success

Jan 5, 2015 by

Welcome back to school everyone!  I hope you are refreshed and excited heading into the new year.  As we begin 2015, I want to point out three things.

First, what type of energy are you bringing to school today?  Please, I beg of you, do not be one of those teachers who comments on how tough it is being back at school or how they wish break was ____ longer or starts counting the days until the next one…  we have to be leaders of good attitudes and excitement.  If we want our students to be excited about learning, we need to be excited about teaching.  We have an entire year to change brains and foster a love of learning in our students.  How exciting is that?  Would you want to learn from you based on the energy you are bringing today?

Second, what are you committing to doing differently this year?  If you attended one of my recent seminars, what have you committed to try by February 1st?  Take small steps but always be taking steps to be better in the classroom.  Try a new polling feature, have the students participate in a backchannel discussion, experiment with a new AR app, introduce a new lesson on coding… whatever it is, try something to keep your lessons fresh and exciting.  Remember, the brain loves novelty so it is important that we keep trying new things in the classroom.

Third, remember what the brain loves in all of your lessons this year.  If we want to invigorate minds, we have to make sure we are using the following in our classrooms:  Movement, Music, Social Activity, Novelty, and Laughter.  Let’s use these everyday in our classrooms!

As a side note, please make sure to keep sharing what you are doing in the classroom.  I know a lot of you are trying new things all the time- please take a couple minutes to send me a short email with what you are doing or click on the link above.  Don’t be selfish- share your experiences so we can all improve our teaching.

Thank you- I look forward to hearing from all of you in 2015!
